A company named Nu Dot Co has paid a large $135 million for the right to the ‘.web’, world’s most expensive generic top-level domain.

The company beat off competition from the Google and web registry corporations Afilias, Radix and Donuts. Nu Dot Co now offers domains ending with ‘.web’ to other corporations.

The world’s most popular domain is ‘.com’. The world’s second and third most expensive domains are ‘.shop’ ($41.5 million) and ‘.app’ ($25 million) respectively.

The auction is the result of a four-year process that has seen many different corporations applying to run .web.

“New Generic Top-Level Domain Program auctions are the community-established, last resort method to help determine which applicant will have the opportunity to operate a particular new generic top-level domain, when multiple entities vied for the same or confusingly similar domains,” said Akram Atallah, president of ICANN’s Global Domains Division.

“We look forward to seeing the community’s recommendations for the use of these proceeds.”

ICANN has now sold out the rights to more than 16 top-level domains, including .app and .hotel, raising around $230million. Auctions are pending for an additional 16 domains that many corporations are bidding to control.
